• Democratic Mayor Endorses Don Bacon for Congress

Monday, October 31, 2016 – Today Carroll Smith, the Mayor of Valley, endorsed Brigadier General (retired) Don Bacon for United States Congress.  Mayor Smith is a registered Democrat and the sixth Mayor within the district to endorse Don Bacon.

“I endorse Don Bacon for Congress.  Don served the United States Air Force for nearly 30 years and is a leader who commanded thousands of America’s servicemen and women,” says Mayor Smith.  “He is not a politician and will always do what is best for our country to keep it strong, instead of focusing on winning elections. I value the sanctity of life and I know Don will always fight to build a culture of life across our nation.”

“I thank Democratic Mayor Smith for his support and endorsement,” says General Don Bacon. “I honor his service and leadership at Valley, and I have enjoyed getting to know him and the great citizens he represents. When I am elected, I will work with members of both parties to ensure the people of Nebraskans are being heard in Washington.”

Bacon for Congress is proud to have the support and endorsement of six mayors within the district.

  • Don Bacon For Congress Statement on Brad Ashford’s Latest Ad

Saturday, October 29, 2016 – Today, the Don Bacon for Congress campaign released the following statement on Brad Ashford’s latest TV spot complaining about attack ads:

“It’s pretty hypocritical for Brad Ashford to look Nebraskans in the eye and decry attack ads when Nancy Pelosi and her cronies have spent at least $2 million dollars spreading lies about General Don Bacon on his behalf,” says Camille Gallo, spokesperson for the Don Bacon campaign. “If Brad Ashford has such a problem with this, he should tell Nancy Pelosi and her pals to remove their disgraceful ads designed to frighten senior citizens by lying about Don Bacon’s stance on social security and Medicare.”

  • New Poll Shows Don Bacon Leading Brad Ashford

Friday, October 28, 2016 – Today, Don Bacon for Congress released a poll showing General Don Bacon leading Congressman Brad Ashford 47-45. The poll was conducted on Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27th.  It was an automated survey of 1,482 likely voters in NE-02 and was conducted by Aaron Trost of the Singularis Group.

This comes just a few days after a poll conducted by North Star Opinion Research showed General Don Bacon leading Brad Ashford 48-44. That poll also found voters preferred a generic Republican candidate to a Democrat by the same margin and Donald Trump led Democratic rival Hillary Clinton 44 to 40 percent in the district.

“This latest poll shows voters are continuing to reject the liberal policies supported by Brad Ashford and his pals, Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton,” says Camille Gallo, spokesperson for Don Bacon for Congress campaign.  “It’s clear that momentum is with Don Bacon as voters continue to learn Brad Ashford isn’t the bipartisan he pretends to be.”

    1,482 Likely Voters – 95% Confidence Interval – 2.54% Margin of Error

    Don Bacon 47.40%
    Brad Ashford 45.22%
    Steven Laird 3.99%
    Undecided 3.39%

  • Statement on FBI Reopening Investigation Into Hillary Clinton’s Emails

Today, the Don Bacon for Congress campaign released the following statement on the FBI reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails:

“The FBI’s decision to reopen an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s secret email server raises serious questions about whether she is really fit to hold the highest office in the country,” says Don Bacon for Congress spokesperson, Camille Gallo. “Since Brad Ashford has been a loyal supporter and a proud leadership team member of her presidential campaign, 2nd District families deserve to know if he still stands behind this scandal-ridden candidate, who has treated our national security with total disregard. Luckily, in 11 days Nebraskans will be able to vote for General Don Bacon who will be an independent leader in Congress and always put the best interests of 2nd District families first.”

  • GOP Poll Gives Challenger Late Edge in Rare GOP Pickup Opportunity

Republican Don Bacon narrowly leads Nebraska Democrat Brad Ashford

    Posted Oct 26, 2016 3:47 PM

Republican polling gives Nebraska’s Don Bacon a late advantage in his challenge to Democratic Rep. Brad Ashford in the state’s 2nd District.

Republican polling shows the party’s chances improving in Nebraska’s 2nd District, one of the GOP’s three top opportunities to knock off a Democratic incumbent this year.

Retired Brig. Gen. Don Bacon led incumbent Democratic Rep. Brad Ashford 48 to 44 percent among registered voters in a North Star Opinion Research poll, shared first with Roll Call. The poll was conducted Oct. 22-24 for the Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC tied to House GOP leadership. The fund has invested $950,000 on TV and digital in the Omaha-based district.

Bacon trailed Ashford 41 to 47 percent in a North Star poll from late August. North Star attributed Bacon’s improving numbers to positive information voters are seeing about him on TV and negative ads they’re seeing about Ashford.

This month’s poll also found voters preferred a generic Republican candidate to a Democrat by the same 48 to 44 percent margin.

In the presidential race, Republican Donald Trump led Democratic rival Hillary Clinton 44 to 40 percent in the district, with 8 percent supporting Libertarian Gary Johnson and 2 percent backing the Green Party’s Jill Stein.

Forty percent of the interviews were conducted by cell phone, and the poll had a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.

[Roll Call’s 2016 Election Guide: House]

Ashford has been a top GOP target because he sits in a district that Mitt Romney carried by 7 points in 2012. He narrowly unseated Republican Rep. Lee Terry in 2014, a defeat that Republicans chalked up as a rejection of the gaffe-prone Terry more than an endorsement of Ashford.

A onetime Republican and independent, Ashford has tried to distance himself from his current party since he’ll need split-ticket voters to help him win re-election. He’s one of just a handful of Democrats to earn the endorsement of pro-business groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business.

As one of two states (along with Maine) that split their electoral votes by congressional district, Nebraska’s 2nd District has also been a presidential target. Clinton’s coordinated campaign recently announced extra spending here — split with Maine’s 2nd District — to benefit down-ballot Democrats. And Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, will speak at a rally in the district on Thursday.

An internal poll for Ashford’s campaign in late September gave him a 10-point edge over Bacon, 50 to 40 percent.

The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call rates this seat as Tilts Democrat.

  • Don Bacon Releases New Ad Titled “One Vote”

Wednesday, October 26, 2016 – Today, the Don Bacon for Congress campaign released its seventh TV spot for the general election cycle.

This ad highlights the difference just one vote can make in Congress.  One vote gave us Obamacare and Brad Ashford’s record shows he will always be a reliable vote for Nancy Pelosi’s agenda.  Unlike Brad Ashford, General Don Bacon will only be accountable to Nebraskans, not political parties.

“Nebraskans know just one single vote in Congress can change America,” says Camille Gallo, spokesperson for the Don Bacon campaign. “After all, it was only one vote that gave us Obamacare which continues to hurt 2nd District families. When the chips are down, Brad Ashford will always be a reliable vote for Nancy Pelosi’s agenda, unlike General Bacon who will always put Nebraskans first.”

  • Don Bacon Campaign Condemns New DCCC Attack Ad

Tuesday, October 25, 2016 – Today, the DCCC is up on the air with another attack ad that completely distorts General Don Bacon’s position on Social Security and Medicare.

The truth is Don Bacon does not support altering or reducing Social Security for those in or near retirement. Don believes we should consider the possibility of adjusting current long-term policies to ensure the viability of Social Security for future generations. Adjustments need to be made or the program will go bankrupt. Unlike Brad Ashford, Don Bacon will be a leader and work to find a solution to this problem.

But it’s a FACT that Brad Ashford once called for a 20% cut in Social Security and Medicare, and it’s also a FACT Ashford proposed turning Medicaid into voucher system. This attack ends with questioning if Don Bacon can be trusted, but if you look at Brad Ashford’s record he’s the only untrustworthy candidate on the ballot.

“The DCCC is once again on the airwaves telling lies about Don Bacon’s position on social security,” says Don Bacon for Congress spokesperson, Camille Gallo.  “The truth is Don Bacon does not support altering the Social Security for those in or near retirement. Once upon a time, Brad Ashford called for a 20% cut in entitlements and proposed turning Medicaid into a voucher system, but the Democrats would rather pretend like that didn’t happen. If you look at Brad Ashford’s real record he’s the only candidate that can’t be trusted to protect 2nd District seniors.”

Congress Hopes Ashford Argues for Budget Amendment

  • National Vietnam & Gulf War Veterans Coalition Endorses Don Bacon

Monday, October 24, 2016 – Today, retired Brigadier General Don Bacon was unanimously approved for the endorsement of the National Vietnam & Gulf War Veterans Coalition. The Coalition consists of 70 veteran organizations and veteran advocacy groups which represent over 250,000 veterans.

“Your leadership and patriotism are especially needed in the House of Representatives at this particular time in our history when our beloved country is at risk, not only from foreign terrorists but also from domestic advocates of extreme social and economic ‘reform.” said coalition Chairman John J. Molloy, OSJ.

“I am humbled and honored to receive the endorsement of the National Vietnam & Gulf War Veterans Coalition,” said Don Bacon.  “I will continue to be a strong voice for veterans care and our national security and hope to bring this message to Washington.”

  • Ashford Should Pull Ad & Apologize to Airmen

Monday, October 24, 2016 – In recent weeks, the Ashford for Congress campaign has been running an advertisement which prominently features a picture of Brad Ashford standing with members of the 55th Wing at RAF Mildenhall in the United Kingdom.

The Bacon campaign is calling on Brad Ashford to immediately take down this advertisement and to personally apologize to the Airmen in the photo for the improper use of their image in a paid political advertisement.

Brad Ashford’s use of this picture violates both Department of Defense Instructions and Air Force Instructions, which prohibits active duty military members of the Armed Forces from being in uniform “in connection with furthering political activities.” Additional guidance put out this year instructs that “installation commanders must decline requests for military personnel or federal civilian employees to appear in or support political campaign or election events in their official capacities.”

The Bacon campaign has reliably been informed that permission was not granted for the use of this photo for political purposes and that the Ashford campaign has ignored requests from service members in the photo to have the picture removed. Several Aircrew members contacted Don Bacon directly saying they did not want to be part of Ashford’s campaign ads.

“Brad Ashford needs to stop using our troops as props in photo ops for his paid political advertisements,” said Bacon Campaign Manager Mark Dreiling. “The Ashford campaign’s flimsy excuse that the photo was taken by a member of Brad Ashford’s family and that it is slightly blurred does not make this acceptable. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, he should be aware of such rules and apologize to the Airmen appearing in the ad without their consent.”
